Cleansing or detoxification diets are reputed to promote weight loss and eliminate toxins from the body. Although the specifics of the diets may differ, they typically involve a strict menu plan that consists mostly of water, fruit, fruit juices and raw vegetables. Some weight-loss cleansing programs recommend using enemas and taking herbs and other dietary supplements to help clear the intestines. The concept of a so-called "healthy" weight-loss cleanser may actually be an oxymoron.

Considerations

The proposed benefits of detoxification or cleansing diets are not scientifically proven, according to MayoClinic.com. Nevertheless some people say detox diets make them feel more energetic and alert. These beliefs may be little more than power of suggestion. Your body can effectively remove toxins without assistance from special diets or cleansing products.

Types

Several cleansing diets are touted to encourage weight loss. The Master Cleanse, also known as the Lemonade Diet, requires that you drink a mixture of lemonade, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water for at least 10 days. The lemonade fast is accompanied by saltwater enemas to encourage bowel movements.

Martha's Vineyard diet claims you can clear away toxins and lose up to one 1 lb. a day by following a strict liquid diet of soups and juices. Acceptable ingredients include lemon, ginger, berries, celery, spinach, kale, cabbage and collard greens.

Misconceptions

Claims that detoxification diets and products will increase bowel movement activity and cause weight loss by blocking the absorption of calories are bogus, reports the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, or UPMC. Nearly all calories are absorbed by the body before they reach the colon.

Detoxification diets that severely restrict calories are generally not effective over the long haul, notes MayoClinic.com. Any weight lost is typically regained once you go off the diet.

Side Effects

Weight-loss cleansing diets that call for severe calorie restriction can make it difficult or impossible to meet all of your nutritional needs. Side effects of detoxification diets may include dizziness, nausea, cramps, fatigue and dehydration, reports MayoClinic.com. Cleansing diets may also cause blurred vision, sore throat, headache, decreased urine output and irritability.

Outlook

Permanent weight loss is accomplished by following a healthy diet and exercising regularly rather than following fad diets. A nutritious eating plan is based on vegetables, fruits, lean protein sources and whole grains. In addition, you should strive for 30 to 60 minutes of moderate aerobic activity at least 5 days per week. Do not make any dietary changes or start an exercise program without speaking to your doctor first.
