Physical Symptoms of Major Depression

Major depression is classified as a depression in which at least five symptoms linger for at least two weeks. As is the case with most mental illnesses, major depression has emotional and mental signs, including sadness, hopelessness, guilt and low self esteem. However, there are also some physical signs to watch for if you think you may suffer from major depression.

Aches and Pains

Aches and pains throughout the body, such as headaches, backaches or stomachaches, are common in people who suffer from major depression. Generally, the sufferer will complain that these aches and pains don't respond to conventional treatments, and there usually isn't a viable medical explanation for the symptoms.

Weight Loss or Gain

Changes in eating habits are a symptom of major depression. If the sufferer eats considerably more than usual, significant weight gain may be noticed. If the sufferer eats a lot less than normal, significant weight loss may be noticed. The weight gain or loss is usually greater than a 5 percent change within a month, according to the Healthy Place website.

Unkempt Appearance

Major depression often leads to a diminished sense of self worth, the Mayo Clinic reports. This can lead to a change in the way a person cares for herself. You may notice that her clothes are wrinkled and/or dirty, her hair is greasy and she seems like she is in need of a bath.

Fatigue

As a result of changes in sleeping patterns, a person with major depression may begin to feel fatigued. This fatigue leads to a noticeable lack of energy. A person who once enjoyed shopping may not have the energy to shop, and a person who once enjoyed sports may not have the energy to play anymore. Fatigue will also affect performance at work and school. An adult with major depression won't perform like normal at work, and a child with major depression will begin to do poorly in school. It may seem like all the person wants to do is rest and be alone.
