Depression is a serious mental illness characterized by long-term feelings of sadness and hopelessness. According to the U.K. National Health Service's website, NHS Choices, around 10 percent of people will experience depression at some point in their lives, and it can strike at any age. There are varying degrees of depression, from mild to severe. Mild depression may go away by itself, but moderate and severe cases usually require medical intervention. If you are depressed, your doctor may prescribe antidepressants, psychotherapy or a combination of the two. Some herbs may also help to alleviate depression. Talk to your health care provider before using them.
Examples
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, the herbs ginkgo biloba and St. John's wort may improve symptoms of depression. The ginkgo tree is one of the oldest in the world, and its leaves are used to treat a number of ailments. The flowers of the St. John's wort plant have been used for hundreds of years to treat mental conditions.
Use
Both ginkgo biloba and St. John's wort can be taken as teas or in capsules or tablets. The UMMC website recommends taking 300mg of a standardized extract of St. John's wort two to three times a day, or 40 to 80 mg of ginkgo biloba three times daily. These dosages should only be used as guidelines. Talk to your doctor about the right dose for you.
Efficacy
St. John's wort's antidepressant effects have been studied extensively, according to UMMC. It appears to be effective for mild to moderate depression, but more severe forms of depression may not respond to treatment with this herb. Studies examining the potential of ginkgo biloba as an antidepressant are limited, but data from animal research published in "Phytotherapy Research" suggests that an extract of ginkgo biloba leaves possesses antidepressant and anti-stress qualities.
Side Effects
UMMC notes that St. John's wort has fewer side effects than most antidepressants; however, it may cause dizziness, fatigue and sexual dysfunction. It may also increase sensitivity to sunlight. Ginkgo biloba may cause side effects including nausea, dizziness and allergic skin reactions. Do not consume fresh ginkgo biloba seeds, as they contain a substance that may cause seizures and even death.
Contraindications
Do not use ginkgo biloba if you have a bleeding disorder or if you are taking anti-coagulant drugs, as the herb may increase the risk of bleeding. According to UMMC, St. John's wort interacts with a number of prescription drugs, including birth control pills, anticoagulants and anti-seizure drugs. Talk to your doctor before using either of these herbs.
