A common symptom of a wheat allergy is a skin rash. Brain fog is a symptom that causes cloudy thinking, lack of mental clarity and difficulty processing information, according to Dr. Lawrence Wilson, a nutrition consultant based in Scottsdale and Prescott, Arizona. If you suspect that you have a wheat allergy, make an appointment with your doctor for a proper diagnosis. A wheat allergy may cause a severe allergic reaction that could lead to death if not properly treated. A wheat allergy and wheat intolerance are different conditions and need to be evaluated by a medical professional.

About

A wheat allergy is a malfunction of the immune system, according to MayoClinic.com. When you eat wheat products, your immune system mistakes the proteins in wheat as harmful. It builds a defense system the same way it would against a harmful bacteria or virus. Specific antibodies are created to attack and fight off the wheat proteins. The introduction of IgE antibodies into the bloodstream causes mast cells to produce greater levels of histamine. Histamine is the chemical that causes most wheat-related allergy symptoms.

Rashes

The most common allergic skin conditions related to a wheat allergy are eczema, general itching and hives, according to MayoClinic.com. Eczema is a chronic skin condition where the skin is hypersensitive to certain triggers. A food allergy to wheat can trigger an eczema outbreak, causing blister-like pimples that can weep and crust over. Eczema also forms patches of leathery and dry skin. Hives are inflammation in the skin that develops with defined borders in various shapes and sizes. Hives are red in color and will produce a white center when pressed on.

Brain Fog

Wilson states that certain food allergies, such as wheat, can cause brain fog. Brain fog from a wheat allergy is a combination of chemical reactions and sinus congestion. When the sinuses are inflamed, they swell and place pressure on various parts of the head. This extra pressure and stress can cause your mental processes to become limited. Eliminating wheat from the diet should clear up the brain fog.

Other Symptoms

Other symptoms of a wheat allergy may include digestive issues, rhinitis and asthma. Digestive issues include bloating, gas, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping and stomach pain. You also could develop watery eyes, throat irritation, nasal congestion, a runny nose, postnasal drip or sneezing. Asthma symptoms include chest tightness, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.

Warning

Hives may be one of the first signs of anaphylactic shock, a rare but life-threatening condition. If you experience hives along with shortness of breath, lightheadedness and extreme dizziness, call your doctor.
