Most body cleanse systems claim to give you more energy, eliminate harmful toxins and make you feel better. With so many brands and types on the market, it might seem intimidating trying to choose the best option. Certain ingredients used in some cleanses can cause you more harm than good. Always discuss performing a body cleanse with your physician prior to performing it.

History

Some manufacturers claim that body cleanse systems can help to restore your body's natural cleansing processes, improve alertness, boost energy levels and maybe even lose a few pounds. Body cleanse systems use a variety of herbs and herb extracts to help to remove unwanted toxins from your body.

Ingredients

While various manufacturers may use different ingredients in their body cleanse systems, most of the ingredients are similar or closely related. Common examples include guar gum, slippery elm bark, apple pectin and licorice. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate body cleanse products, so there is no guarantee that each dose has the same amount of ingredients.

Significance

Certain ingredients used in the body cleanse may cause adverse side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, sweats, trembling and dizziness. Since there's no guarantee that each dose has the same amount of ingredients, it may be difficult to pinpoint side effects, especially if your body strongly reacts to a certain ingredient; one pill or capsule may have had more of that ingredient than the previous dose, which would cause a more apparent reaction.

Warning

Side effects can cause other conditions such as dehydration or a vitamin deficiency. Dehydration could occur if you experience long bouts of sweating, diarrhea and vomiting. You could suffer from a vitamin deficiency should diarrhea and vomiting last for an extended time, or if the body cleanse system requires a severely restricted diet.

Considerations

Before performing a body cleanse, carefully read all packaging labels and inserts. Perform additional research about the cleanse by talking to your health care provider or pharmacist. Read all side effects prior to performing the cleanse so you are aware of what to expect and when to contact your doctor. You may also want to consider the length of the cleanse, especially if the cleanse requires a restricted diet. Speak to your doctor about nutritional safety and concerns.
