Biking is an effective way to lose weight and burn calories quickly. Your whole body gets a workout, especially your legs, thighs, calves and glutes. In addition to muscle toning, biking is good for your heart, making it stronger and more efficient, lessening chances of heart disease and heart attacks.

Calories

The amount of calories you burn biking in two hours depends on how fast you cycle and how much you weigh. A leisurely bike ride of less than 10 mph will burn fewer calories than pedaling faster, which will work your heart and burn more calories in a two-hour period.

A 160-lb. person biking at a speed of less than 10 miles per hour will burn 584 calories in two hours, according to MayoClinic.com calculations. Increase the speed to 14 to 16 mph and that person will burn 1,536 calories in two hours, says Calories Burned Biking website. A 200-lb. person will burn 720 calories with a two-hour leisurely bike ride, but traveling between 14 and 16 mph will burn 1,920 calories in two hours. A 240-lb. person cycling at less than 10 mph will burn 864 calories, while vigorous biking will burn 2,304 calories in two hours.

Mountain Biking

If you mountain bike ride for two hours a day, you will burn considerable calories. A 160-lb. person burns 1,229 calories; a 200-lb. person burns 1,536 calories; and a 240-lb. person burns 1,843 calories in two hours, according to Calories Burned Biking.

Weight Loss

You need to burn 3,500 calories more than you consume to lose 1 lb. of weight. If you weigh 160 lbs. and bike a leisurely speed for two hours each day, you'd lose over a pound per week, or 584 calories x 7 days = 4,088 calories. Gradually increasing the intensity of your cycling, or decreasing food calories, can result in a greater weight loss.
