Medications for Rosacea

Rosacea is a disorder characterized by pronounced reddening of the skin. Skin on the face and neck is most commonly affected by the condition. The redness presents intermittently and may cause blemishes such as pimples and bumps. According to the National Rosacea Society, those suffering with the disorder may also experience, bloodshot eyes and the appearance of a swollen nose. There is no cure for the condition; however there are several medications available for the treatment of rosacea.

Antibiotics

Both topical and oral antibiotic treatments are widely used for rosacea. Oral antibiotics are often used in more advanced and sever cases of rosacea, when bumps or pimples have developed secondary to the condition. The medication is generally prescribed at a high dose and as symptoms begin to improve the individual is weaned to a lower dosage. For mild cases of the disorder, topical antibiotics are applied to the affected areas. It is believed that antibiotics work by not only killing bacteria that may form in the blemishes that form secondary to the condition, but also by reducing inflammation in the skin.

Topical Treatments

Topical medications are most often used for the treatment of rosacea on a long term basis. Topical medications often prescribed include Azelaic Acid, topical steroids, topical retinoids, and topical antibiotics. Azelaic Acid or AZA is a substance that is found naturally in grains. The substance produces anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects according to Skin Therapy. Topical steroids are generally used in cases of severe inflammation on a short term basis. Prolonged use of steroids can make symptoms worse.

Ocular Treatments

According to the American Association of Family Physicians, approximately 50 percent of individuals with rosacea suffer from ocular complications of the condition. These symptoms require additional medical treatments. Corticoid steroids and artificial tears are often used to treat the symptom. These medications should be prescribed and used under the direction of an ophthalmologist.

Severe Treatments

For severe cases of rosacea Accutane is often used. Accutane is a form of vitamin A. This medication is often the last option utilized due to the potential for severe side effects. It is for this reason that it is used under the close guidance of an experienced dermatologist.
