Salicylic Acid Pads for Wrinkles

Salicylic acid is a natural product derived from the bark of the willow tree. It is used to manufacture aspirin and has anti-inflammatory properties that are used in the treatment of acne and psoriasis. Many cosmetic manufacturers use salicylic acid in their products. They are often sold as pads or cleansers and are used help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Function

Salicylic acid is from the family of Beta-Hydroxy Acids. It has anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties that removes old layers of skin and encourages regrowth of new skin. The removal of dead skin helps to prevent blocked pores and the development of skin conditions such as acne or blackheads. The regrowth of new skin is also effective in improving the appearance of photo-damaged skin and reducing fine lines or wrinkles. Salicylic acid pads also contain an emollient designed to keep skin moisturized.

Types

The cosmetic industry uses salicylic acid in a variety of skin care products. It is used in concentrations of below 5 percent in creams and pads. They are designed to exfoliate the skin and promote new cell growth leading to a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Salicylic acid is also used in higher concentrations, of 20 to 30 percent, in chemical skin peels. These products may make the skin more sensitive to sun damage. Always use a sunscreen as protection.

Creams

Creams are developed as a topical agent and are for external use. They work by causes the skin to swell then soften. This leads to peeling of dead skin. Ingredients include; salicylic acid, zinc, aloe vera and vitamin E. The zinc helps to relieve itching that may occur. The aloe vera is used as a cell re-generator that promotes healing. Vitamin E is used as an antioxidant and can protect the skin from environmental damage.

Pads

Salicylic acid pads have similar functions and properties to the creams. They are used to cleanse, exfoliate and regenerate healthy skin growth. It is not advisable to use both cream and pads at the same time. This will may result in excessive skin dryness and irritation. If you are pregnant or breast feeding consult your doctor before using a product containing salicylic acid

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can be used as treatment of deeper wrinkles. Salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that may help to prevent skin irritation after treatment. It is also lipid soluble which makes it a suitable treatment for oily skin. The treatment is available at beauty salons and six to eight sessions are recommended for the best results. There are home chemical peel kits available. However it is not advisable to have this procedure without supervision from an appropriately trained professional.
