Meat is defined as "the flesh of mammals used as food, as distinguished from that of birds and fish" according to the World English Dictionary, but many cultures and religions view poultry and fish as meat too. The calories in meat depend on the cut and how it is prepared.
Beef
Beef, which is meat from a cow, can have different fat content, which results in different calories in each cut. A 1-oz. portion of ground beef with 15-percent fat has 60 calories, while the same-sized portion of 30-percent fat ground beef has 93 calories. A T-bone steak with the fat trimmed away has 210 calories in a 3-oz. serving, while a 3-oz. ground beef hamburger patty has 145 calories.
Pork
Ground pork has 75 calories per ounce, while 1 oz. of a cooked pork chop has 71 calories. One 4-oz. serving of pork tenderloin has 154 calories, while a pork roast has 70 calories per ounce.
Poultry
Two common poultry meats are chicken and turkey. Ground chicken has 301 calories per 1-cup serving, while a 1-cup serving of chicken breast has 263 calories. Turkey can also be ground, having 296 calories per 1-cup serving. A 1-oz. portion of light turkey meat has 33 calories, and 35 calories are in a 1-oz. portion of dark turkey meat.
