HCG Pregnyl is a pregnancy hormone that has made the transition from fertility clinic to weight loss clinic. This controversial drug is believed to boost metabolism and accelerate weight loss. Combined with strict dieting, HCG Pregnyl is believed to rapidly burn fat. Only a doctor can decide whether HCG Pregnyl injections are the appropriate course for someone deciding to lose weight.
Human chorionic gonadotropin is the scientific term for HCG. According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnant women naturally produce the HCG hormone. HCG is created by the cells that produce the placenta. HCG supports the early stages of fetal development and is also the hormone used to detect the presence of a pregnancy.
According to Schering-Plough, among the leaders in the field of fertility drugs, HCG Pregnyl is an injectable, highly purified preparation of HCG. It mimics hormones that occur during a menstrual cycle and causes ovulation to occur.
HCG Pregnyl and Weight Loss
Pregnyl is used to treat infertility. It can also be used in adolescent boys to initiate the dropping of the testicles. Most recently, HCG Pregnyl has become a weight-loss means. The HCG injection increases metabolism, which causes the body to metabolize fat quickly.
According to HCG Diet Direct, a strict diet is required to experience extreme weight loss. A diet of only 500 calories each day is required by the HCG diet plan. With the combination of injections and low-calorie dieting, you can expect to lose up to one pound each day.
The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has approved the use of HCG Pregnyl as a medication for female fertility issues and as pediatric hormone therapy, as it is known to cause ovulation. The FDA indicates the risk of HCG Pregnyl as a weight-loss product is highly discouraged. The risks of using HCG Pregnyl are not worth the possible benefits. HCG Pregnyl can cause pain at the injection site, which can result in bruising, swelling, redness and itching. An allergic reaction is also possible and could cause a rash, swelling or pain, according to Schering-Plough. HCG Pregnyl also increases the risks of fetal defects and multiple-birth pregnancies. HCG Pregnyl can also result in a life-threatening condition known as hyperstimulation syndrome, or OHHS. Symptoms of the condition include pelvic and stomach pains, swelling of the extremities, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, diarrhea and infrequent urination.
While HCG Direct indicates Pregnyl has been used to treat obesity for nearly 25 years, no recent scientific research has been conducted to support that usage. A study conducted by the American Medical Association in 1976 indicates there is no significant decrease in weight loss with the usage of HCG. Those injected with HCG and those injected with a placebo yielded similar weight-loss results.
