How to Clean Nebulizers

A nebulizer converts medicine into a breathable mist. Using a mask, an individual is able to inhale the medication to deliver treatment directly to the lungs. A nebulizer is often used to treat ailments such as asthma or cystic fibrosis. Infants and children can also be given a nebulizer treatment. It is important to clean the nebulizer to prolong its life and to remove germs. Cleaning a nebulizer is quite simple if it is done regularly instead of allowing germs and residue to build up.

Step 1

Rinse the nebulizer cup with warm water following every treatment. The cup holds the medication so it is important to ensure no residue is left behind. Shake off any excess water and allow the cup to air dry.

Step 2

Disassemble the nebulizer by removing the cup and mask or mouthpiece. This more thorough cleaning can be done once per day after all treatments have been given for the day. Use warm water and dish detergent to hand-wash the parts. Rinse them thoroughly to remove all soap and residue. Allow the parts to air dry in a dust-free area, if possible.

Step 3

Disinfect the equipment every other day. Use a solution recommended by the nebulizer manufacturer, or mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 1 1/2 cups of water to use as a disinfectant. Pour the mixture into a plugged sink or a small tub. Place the nebulizer cup, mask or mouthpiece into the mixture for 30 minutes. Remove the parts from the mixture and rinse under running water. Allow the parts to dry completely before putting them in storage bags.

Step 4

Unplug the air compressor before cleaning. Use a damp cloth to wipe off the top and sides. The only cleaning necessary for the compressor is to remove dust or particles that have settled onto the exterior. Replace the filter as indicated by the manufacturer.
