Your posture not only affects the way you look but also can impact many aspects of your health. Poor posture is often a matter of habit, and it is unfortunately an easy habit to develop, especially in jobs that involve sitting at a desk for up to 10 hours a day. Sedentary jobs and leisure activities can contribute to poor posture. Paying close attention to your posture can help you change the habit and improve your appearance and overall health.

Appearance

Poor posture can cause you to appear shorter than you really are. According to the Carle Chiropractic Clinic, poor posture can even limit your height growth. Poor posture can occur when sitting, standing, walking and even sleeping. It can make you look unprofessional, bored and self-conscious.

Pain

Slouching and other types of poor posture cause misalignment of your spine, which leads to back pain. Poor posture also can cause pain in your neck, hips, shoulders and legs. Furniture can create bad posture by misaligning your body. Choose ergonomically correct furniture designed to hold your body in the proper position. Good posture, along with stretching exercises, can prevent back pain, according to the National Health Information Center.

Fatigue

Poor posture can cause fatigue and headaches. Holding your body in an improper position can shorten the muscle fibers, making muscles weaker, more easily tired and more prone to injury. Poor posture also puts more strain on the joints, which makes it harder to move and be physically active and might even result in disability.
