Nearly everyone gets blemishes from time to time. While acne blemishes are most common during the teenage years, people can get them well into their 30s and 40s. Blemishes, while not medically serious, can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, especially since they seem to have a knack for appearing at the worst possible moment. Fortunately, it is possible to clear those ill-timed outbreaks.
Oatmeal
Facial masks containing oatmeal can be an easy way to clear up blemishes. GrannyMed recommends preparing a single serving of oatmeal just as it is done for eating, then adding ¼ cup honey. Mix thoroughly, then let the mixture cool. Apply to the face, avoiding the eye area, and leave it on for 10 to 20 minutes. According to GrannyMed, the oatmeal in this facial mask absorbs oil and exfoliates skin, while the honey serves as a skin toner.
Lemon Juice and Rose Water
Natural News suggests applying a mixture of lemon juice and rose water to the skin to treat blemishes, then rinsing it off with cold water after 10 minutes. According to Natural News, lemon juice is a natural astringent and mild antibacterial agent; the rose water acts as a toner while calming the acidity of the lemon juice.
Onion
The Green Beauty Guide says that onions make a great homemade remedy for blemishes, reducing both pimples and acne scars. The site suggests making an onion into a puree in a food processor and applying it as a facial mask once a week.
Garlic
Another homemade remedy suggested by The Green Beauty Guide is fresh garlic. The site recommends using garlic as a topical treatment for blemishes by cutting a clove in half, then rubbing it over the pimple or securing it over the blemish with a band-aid overnight.
Baking Soda
According to The Beauty Brains, baking soda is an effective natural exfoliant, removing dead skin cells without causing excessive irritation, which may make it beneficial in treating acne by increasing the cell turnover rate. The site recommends adding a teaspoon of baking soda to your facial cleanser to exfoliate skin and using a paste of baking soda and water as a facial mask, leaving it on for 5 to 10 minutes or overnight.
Aloe Vera
GrannyMed recommends using aloe vera as a home remedy for pimples and blemishes: Remove a whole leaf from an aloe plant and cut a slit down the middle of the leaf to allow the yellow latex to drain out; this substance can be irritating to the skin. After the latex has drained, peel the skin off the leaf to reveal the thick piece of gel underneath. Rinse the leaf with cold water and rub a piece of the gel over the blemished areas. According to GrannyMed, aloe vera gel is soothing to the skin, has anti-inflammatory properties and is a natural antibiotic.
