Factors like stress, chronic illness and hormone fluctuations can cause libido to wane among women. Natural approaches to boost libido come in various forms. Herbal concoctions, thought to be effective aphrodisiacs, contain ingredients often used for centuries in Chinese medicine. While these products boast safe and effective results, their herbal ingredients are often associated with minor side effects like headache, skin rashes and other complications. Talk to your doctor if you are taking medications that might interfere with any herbal remedy.

Provestra

Provestra is a popular female libido booster. It is said to be a natural aphrodisiac, containing widely used herbal ingredients like ginseng and L-arginine. The formula is taken in supplemental form and is said to heighten arousal, lubrication and sensations among women within 30 days of regular use. While the product claims to have few side effects, the herbal ingredient L-arginine may lower blood pressure and cause nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea in high doses, according to the Mayo Clinic. Though reactions to ginseng are uncommon, it can cause mania when taken with some antidepressants.

Vigorelle

Vigorelle, a female stimulant cream, is said to boost libido by increasing arousal and lubrication. When applied topically to the vagina area, the cream claims to stimulate tissues, dilate the blood vessels and increase blood flow to the area. The natural ingredients include a variety of herbs like gingko biloba and wild yam. While the makers of the product claim the cream is free of side effects, ginkgo biloba is associated with side effects like headache, nausea, gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea and allergic skin reactions, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. In addition, wild yam, which acts as a precursor to human sex hormones, has been reported to cause rashes in some users, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Her Solution

Another popular female libido booster is a supplement called Her Solution. Said to improve libido, expand blood flow, strengthen orgasm and enhance sexual enjoyment, the pills contain natural ingredients like tribulus terrestris and DHEA. Tribulus terrestris, a widely used herbal remedy for sexual dysfunction and often used to improve performance among athletes, may also increase testosterone levels, which could lead to testosterone-related effects like a increased facial hair and mood changes, though these effects are not reported. In addition, DHEA can cause higher-than-normal levels of androgens and estrogen in the body, which might increase the risks of some types of cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic.
