Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo is an oral contraceptive that contains both synthetic estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (norgestimate) in 21 active pills. During the time of taking seven inactive pills, the woman will menstruate.
Hormone Levels
Drugs.com states that the level of ethinyl estradiol stays the same at 0.025 mg in all active pills. The norgestimate levels, however, change each week: 0.180 mg in week one, 0.215 mg in week two and 0.250 mg in week three.
Pregnancy Protection
Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo needs to be taken around the same time every day to be effective. Rxlist.com states that 2.36 out of 100 women become pregnant while taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.
Starting Usage
Rxlist.com recommends starting Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo on a Sunday, taking the first active pill on the first Sunday after menstruation starts. During the first week, a second form of contraceptive should be used.
Missed Pill
If a woman misses one pill, Rxlist.com states it should be taken as soon as possible. If two pills are missed, two pills should be taken as soon as possible, plus two more pills the following day.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Drugs.com warns that Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo does not provide any protection against contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
