Gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of your stomach, limiting the amount of feed you can ingest. This procedure is typically performed with the goal of weight loss in mind. However, gastric bypass poses numerous risks, including infection, nutritional deficiency, kidney stones, low blood sugar and peptic ulcers, according to MayoClinic.com. Changing your diet can be an effective way to overcome obesity without the dangers of gastric bypass surgery. Talk to your doctor before changing your diet to achieve weight loss.

Limit Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are food components that provide energy for your body and support healthy brain and nervous system function, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. However, excess consumption of carbohydrates can lead to obesity. Limit your consumption of foods high in carbohydrates, including breads, tortillas, pastas, pizza crusts, pastries and cakes. This may help you gradually shed unwanted pounds without a risky surgical procedure.

Control Fat Intake

Like carbohydrates, fats are essential for the proper functioning of your body, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." However, not all fats are created equal. Monounsaturated fats, such as those found in olive oil and avocados, can be used in moderation as part of a healthy weight loss diet. Saturated fats, such as those found in red meats, eggs and dairy products, should be consumed sparingly.

Go Raw

A raw food diet may help you lose weight without gastric bypass surgery, according to Rita Romano, author of "Dining in the Raw." This diet is composed of foods that are not heated to internal temperatures above 114 degrees F. Most raw foodists are vegans, which means that they do not consume meats, dairy products or eggs. Instead, a raw food diet includes fresh fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts and seeds. This diet is naturally low in fat and provides your body with lean protein and a wealth of vitamins and minerals to increase your energy, which may help you exercise to shed unwanted pounds.
