Age spots, solar lentigines, liver spots -- whatever you choose to call them -- are a common occurrence on the hands of men and women 40 years and over. These flat, brown spots are harmless reminders of past youth spent outdoors under the ultraviolet rays of the sun, explains the Mayo Clinic. While you can't turn back the hands of time, a homemade lemon remedy can help fade the age spots on your hands, giving them back their youthful appearance.
Step 1
Cut open a fresh lemon, using a sharp knife. Squeeze both of the lemon halves, releasing their juice into a small bowl.
Step 2
Soak one or two cotton pads in the bowl, saturating them with the lemon juice. Lay the cotton pads over the age spots on each of your hands. Leave the juice on your skin for 30 minutes.
Step 3
Rinse the lemon juice from your hands with a cool water rinse. Repeat the lemon juice lightening process three times a week until your age spots fade to such a degree that you are happy with the result.
Step 4
Store the unused portion of lemon in the bowl, covered with plastic wrap. Keep the bowl in the refrigerator when not in use. The lemon juice will keep for one week in the refrigerator. Discard any leftover lemon juice after the one-week period.
Tips and Warnings
- Lemon juice can be quite drying to the skin of your hands. To avoid unnecessary dryness, moisturize your hands after every treatment, using a moisturizing hand cream.
- Discontinue use of the lemon juice lightening treatments if you begin to experience redness, irritation or swelling. If cracking of the skin or pain develops, seek medical attention immediately.
