The prostate is a male gland located in the reproductive system, close to the bladder. The prostate is about the size of a walnut and helps in the production of seminal fluid. Prostate cancer is the third highest cause of death by cancer among males. Modifying your diet to include less fat and more plant-based foods is a good way to keep your prostate healthy, as is regular exercise. Check with your doctor before adding any new exercises to your lifestyle.
Aerobic Exercise
The Prostate Cancer Foundation states that excess body fat is a risk factor for prostate cancer. Performing aerobic exercise to help burn calories and lose weight will lessen your risk. Regular exercise that raises your heart rate such as running, swimming, racquetball, cycling or anything else you find enjoyable will work.
Kegel Exercise
Kegel exercises can help reduce pain and swelling in your prostate, and problems associated with an enlarged prostate, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Kegel exercises are performed by squeezing the same muscles you would squeeze to hold urine in or stop the flow once you have started.
Resistance Training
Performing resistance exercises can help you lose some weight and get your body in shape to avoid prostate problems. You can use weights or resistance bands to work all of the major muscle groups in your body and build muscle. The Prostate Cancer Foundation says that 10 extra pounds of muscle will burn 140 extra calories per day just to maintain itself.
Prostate Massage
Massaging your prostate gland or having it massaged can help relieve certain prostate-related problems such as impotence, pain and swelling.
