Exercising by marching, whether with a band, a military academy or on your own, is a good way to burn calories. Marching is a more intensive exercise than walking and expends more calories in the same duration.

Calories

On average, a 130-lb. person marching rapidly, military style, burns 384 calories in 60 minutes, according to NutriStrategy calculations. A 155-lb. person marching burns 457 calories; a 180-lb. person burns 531 calories marching rapidly.

Boost Your Metabolism

You can burn more calories by marching with greater intensity, such as exaggerating your leg movements, swinging your arms higher and marching faster. If you are marching in a band and carrying weight, such as a drum, you burn more calories as a result as well.

Tips

Research published in "The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing" recommends safety tips for marching. Start marching routines slowly and build endurance to prevent injury. Hydrate with 7 to 10 oz. of water or sport drinks every 10 to 20 minutes. Wear light-colored clothing.
