Calories are burned by the most basic of functions, including breathing. When a hula hooper stands and gyrates the hula hoop on her hips, she is, in fact, dancing and burning calories at the same time.
History
Hula hooping was named after the Hawaiian hula dance and is an aerobic exercise. Patented by Wham-O in 1963, the hula hoop is a circular tube that is held up by swinging the hips in a gyrating motion.
Benefits
Hula hooping is low impact, meaning that there is no jumping around or placing stress on the joints of the legs and arms. Hula hooping exercises and tones the muscles of the arms, legs and trunk.
Time Frame
Hula-hooping advocates believe an average of 300 to 600 calories are burned per hour, depending upon the skill level of the hooper. A 150-lb. individual can burn 306 calories per hour; calories burned depends upon body weight and total exercise time.
