Treadmills are exercise machines that allow you to run or walk while in one place. Operated with a rubber belt that rotates around a deck, treadmills use various features and controls to make adjustments to the speed and incline during the workout. Speed is controlled and adjusted using a speed sensor mounted to the deck, but this sensor can also experience various problems that affect the accuracy of the treadmill.
Function
The speed sensor is attached to the deck of the treadmill and functions by detecting and counting the number of revolutions per minute of the belt or roller. After detecting the revolutions, the speed sensor sends the information to the circuit board that connects to the display control console. Errors can occur throughout this system that result in treadmill speed problems.
Features
Treadmills come with a variety of features that control speed and incline. Most treadmills have push-button controls on the display console that automatically increase or decrease speed. The speed sensor is responsible for detecting these changes and maintaining the determined speed. If an error occurs, however, the speed of the treadmill will fluctuate, causing erratic speed information on the display.
Identification
Identifying speed sensor errors can typically be done with a few troubleshooting steps. Start by setting the speed at 2.5 mph and walking on the treadmill for five to 10 minutes looking for unexpected changes to the speed. Gradually increase the speed of the treadmill to perform a communications test and look for a flashing signal on the display. When the LED flashes, the communication from the speed sensor to the display console is working fine. On speed sensors that use a magnetic feedback unit, move a kitchen magnet in front of the sensor until a speed display is shown on the display. If there is a speed sensor error, speed will not be displayed.
Prevention/Solution
The first step to preventing speed sensor errors is to keep the unit clean from dirt and debris. Routinely wipe the unit with a damp cloth and keep the treadmill away from dusty conditions. Reset the computer and speed sensor by unplugging the treadmill. Calibrate the speed sensor according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Considerations
Replacement speed sensors are available that fit most treadmills. Some treadmills may also have a warranty that covers replacement parts such as the speed sensor. Contact a local exercise equipment company or the manufacturer for any detailed questions about warranty, speed sensor errors, replacement parts or repair.
