Whether they pop up the day before a big date or show themselves on a daily basis, blemishes are rarely ever welcome. From painful red bumps to small, pus-filled pimples, there are several types of acne blemishes. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to not only treat current blemishes, but also prevent future breakouts. Once you understand how to get blemishes to disappear, your skincare routine is relatively simple and straightforward.

Step 1

Cleanse the skin with a mild antibacterial soap every morning and evening. Use your hands to gently rub the cleanser around the skin and rinse with warm water. Avoid using rough washcloths or abrasive cleansers, such as those with scrubbing crystals. The friction against the delicate facial skin may actually worse your blemishes. You should also cleanse the skin after it becomes dirty or sweaty, such as after exercising.

Step 2

Soak a cotton ball with toner and sweep it across the facial skin to close up pores. Allow the toner to air-dry for about 30 seconds. Apply a thin layer of facial moisturizer to the skin to keep it hydrated and healthy.

Step 3

Apply a light layer of acne cream or ointment across the face every evening. Choose a product that contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, both of which are effective at treating acne. Opt for a gel-based product if you have oily skin and a cream-based skin if you have dry skin.

Step 4

Use oil-free and/or noncomedogenic products for the face and hair. These products include your facial cleanser, toner, moisturizer and cosmetics and any hair products used. Products made with oil can actually encourage blemishes if the oil seeps into the facial pores.

Step 5

Avoid popping, picking or squeezing acne blemishes. The oils and dirt on your fingertips can become lodged in the skin, making acne even worse. In some cases, bacteria may even enter your facial pores and cause an irritating infection. As a general rule, keep the hands and hair away from the face as much as possible.

Step 6

Dab a small amount of medium-consistency cosmetic cover-up or stick foundation on onto the blemish with a concealer brush. Choose a foundation shade that matches your skin color as exactly as possible. Use your finger to gently blend the makeup into the skin. Use a small brush to apply a light layer of powder over the foundation. Repeat these two steps until the blemish has been completely covered.

Step 7

Drink at least eight, 8-oz. glasses of water every day. Although this may not help take care of current blemishes, it can prevent future blemishes. Drinking plenty of water helps hydrate and moisturize the skin, which decreases the risk of acne.
