Centrum Silver Supplement Facts

As you get older, your nutritional needs change and you may be having trouble getting all the nutrients you need from food sources. Centrum Silver is a multivitamin and mineral supplement for adults older than 50. It is available in tablet form or Citrus Berry Chewables. Remember that a dietary supplement should enhance, not replace, an overall healthy diet and lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before starting a supplement to make sure that it is safe for you.

Percent Daily Value

The label of Centrum Silver displays the quantity of each vitamin and mineral as well as the percent daily value for most of them. The daily value is an estimate of the amount of a nutrient that most healthy adults should receive in a day. The Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Information Center states that the daily value does not consider age. Older adults may need more than 100 percent of the daily value for certain nutrients to meet their needs. A registered dietitian or physician can determine the right daily value for you.

B Vitamins

Your body needs B vitamins for metabolic reactions and getting energy from food. According to the Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Information Center, adults older than 50 may be at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency, so they should get up to 400 mcg per day from a supplement. Centrum Silver Cardio has 25 mcg vitamin B12, or 417 percent of the daily value. It has 100 percent of the daily value for the B vitamins folic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid, and 150 percent of the daily value for vitamin B6.

Other Vitamins

Centrum Silver provides 125 percent of the daily value for vitamin D, a necessary vitamin for strong bones because it allows your body to absorb and use dietary calcium. Vitamins C and E are antioxidant vitamins, and vitamin C also promotes healing and supports a healthy immune system. Centrum Silver has 100 percent of the daily value for vitamin C and 167 percent of the daily value for vitamin E. It has 50 percent of the daily value for vitamin A, and 38 percent of the daily value for vitamin K.

Essential Minerals

Older adults may be likely to develop osteoporosis because of a decrease in bone mineral density, and adequate calcium intake is essential for reducing the risk. Centrum Silver Supplement provides 22 percent of the daily value for calcium. It provides 100 percent of the daily value for iodine and 115 percent of the daily value for manganese. The supplement also supplies at least 60 percent of the daily value for selenium, zinc and molybdenum.

Nutrients Without Daily Values

Some nutrients in Centrum Silver may provide health benefits but they do not have an established daily value. The supplement provides 300 mcg lycopene and 250 mcg lutein, which the Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Information Center states are phytonutrients called carotenoids. Lycopene may protect against prostate cancer, and lutein may support healthy vision and immune function. Centrum Silver also has 150 mcg boron, 5 mcg nickel, 10 mcg vanadium and 2 mg silicon.
