The cold-water codfish is a large and economically important fish, prized as a food and also as the source of cod liver oil. The Red Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the waters between Australia and Japan are home to cod.
Cholesterol
Cod is high in the "good" HDL cholesterol, containing lots of omega-3 fatty acids. HDL cholesterol protects the heart muscles, and people who regularly eat cod and other fish with omega-3 have a much lower risk of heart disease and heart attacks than those who don't eat fish.
Nutrition
One 231 g fillet of cod contains just 189 calories. It offers 41 g of protein and much vitamin D, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, niacin, phosphorus and potassium. The use of cod liver oil became a subject of controversy in 2009, when some doctors warned against its use because of the presence of too much vitamin A, which can be toxic in high doses.
Health
In addition to heart benefits, eating cod helps protect you from colon cancer, and eating fish in general protects against several other forms of cancer. Cod and other fish also help protect against macular degeneration, asthma and arthritis.
