Much of the food that has become the basis of the modern Western diet is to blame for the stomach issues that affect our culture. Refined sugars, white flour products, caffeine, alcohol and pre-packaged "junk food" are the underlying causes for stomach and digestive disorders such as heartburn, acid reflux and colon cancer. If eliminating some or all of the above seems daunting, start by changing to some foods that will heal the gut.
Cranberry
Cranberries are known for preventing bacteria in the urinary and digestive tract. H. pylori is the bacterium that is often the cause of disorders of the stomach and intestines and can lead to inflammation and infection and ultimately to gastritis and ulcers. The compounds in cranberry don't allow the H. pylori to live in the gut, and if taken prophylacticly they don't allow the bacteria to attach itself to the lining of the stomach or intestines.
Cold Water Fish - Omega-3s
Cold water fish (tuna, salmon and halibut) is one of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids (one of the essential acids our body needs to function but can't produce) and it is necessary in order for the human body to function optimally. Omega-3s have been shown to not only prevent colon cancer, but also to halt or reverse the progression of the disease.
Apples
Apples are an excellent source of fiber which alleviates constipation and hard stools and the skin of the fruit contains polyphenols which, according to Cornell University researchers, is a phytochemical that is known to have anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties.
Yogurt
Yogurt contains active cultures, also known as probiotics, which are good bacteria that can help heal the gut. This good bacteria inhibits the growth of unwelcome bacteria and can also be helpful in treating diarrhea, lactose intolerance, and inflammation in the gut.
Herbs
Black currant, fennel, fenugreek, coriander, ginger, tamarind and turmeric are some of the herbs that can help a variety of ailments of the stomach and digestive system.
