A junk food diet sounds like a dream to many people. Usually junk food is the food that you eat and feel guilty about, knowing that it makes you gain weight. In fact, research done by Dr. Paul J. Kenny of the Scripps Research Institute found that eating junk food can also actually shrink the pleasure centers in your brain, making it harder for you to feel satisfied. While you can't eat a diet of only junk food for weight loss goals, you can still indulge your sweet tooth while practicing other good eating habits to lose weight.
Step 1
Choose one day per week in which you are allowed to eat junk food. This helps you to not feel deprived while on a diet and may give you the incentive that you need to follow a more strict diet for the rest of the week. Eating low-calorie, healthy foods for six days and indulging in your favorite chips, chocolate and candy on one day is a fair trade-off.
Step 2
Change your junk food into something more beneficial by adding healthier ingredients. Women's Health Magazine suggests adding bran to a sugary cereal or adding bulgur to beef up a fatty hamburger. Looking for ways to make your junk foods a little healthier means you can still enjoy them within reason.
Step 3
Try sugar-free lollipops or sugar free gum as diet aids. MSNBC.com reports that women have found success with these aids to help them from not snacking as often. With a lollipop or piece of gum in the mouth, you'll be less tempted to snack on other junk foods. Choosing fruity gum can also help you indulge a sweet tooth without the calories.
Step 4
Eat leafy greens to help neutralize the acids from the candy. junk food and soda that you eat, even if it's only one day per week. Junk food is usually very acidic, and leafy greens like lettuce and spinach are considered alkaline, which will help to neutralize that acid. Try eating a large salad before you indulge in a candy bar.
Step 5
Refrain from using junk food as health food. Many junk food companies offer 100 calorie packs of your favorite treats, and it can be easy to start thinking of those packs as healthy options. They should not be enjoyed daily, as calories aren't the only thing you should be concerned about when eating junk food, because sugar, carbohydrates and artificial ingredients still lurk inside. Your best bet is to enjoy them on your "free day" only.
