Getting your little picky eater to consume healthy foods can sometimes be tricky. A good way to prompt healthy eating is by allowing your child to create his own snacks. He will be more likely to enjoy eating something he's made and his body will thank you when snacks are healthy, too.
Step 1
Make a smoothie. This is a healthy way to sneak in fruit servings and can be as unique as your child. While an adult must work the blender (and possibly pour out the smoothie), your child can do the rest. Add one 8-oz. cup of low-fat yogurt to the blender. The yogurt flavor doesn't matter as long as it's one your child enjoys. Add 1 1/2 cups of fruit, again of your child's choosing. Bananas and berries often are popular choices, and some parents add fresh spinach to the mix for a green-colored delight. Blend them together until well mixed, then let your child enjoy her cool and healthy smoothie.
Step 2
Serve a sandwich-kabob, rather than a plain sandwich. Cut up cubes of bread, cheese, meat, olives, pickles, cherry tomatoes, lettuce or anything else that sounds good. Let children use skewers to stack up their own sandwich combinations and then eat their healthy creations.
Step 3
Share some "ants on a log." Give your child some celery sticks that have already been cut, washed and ready to eat. You will also need some raisins and peanut butter. Allow your child to fill the hollow of the celery with peanut butter, then press the raisin "ants" into the peanut butter. With a little imagination, this can look like ants crawling across a log, and the snack is both tasty and healthy.
