Red and white are the major types of wine, with each type available in many varieties. Some popular red wines include Pinot Noir, Merlot and Sangiovese. Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc are popular white wines. The number of calories in a glass of wine varies among the types and varieties.

Types

A standard pour of wine is 5 oz. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Nutrient Database, a glass of a typical red wine contains 125 calories and a glass of a typical white wine contains 121 calories.

White Varieties

The calories in each variety of white wine do not vary much. The USDA Nutrient Database lists Chenin Blanc and Riesling white wines as having 118 calories. Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc white wines have 119 calories.

Red Varieties

On average, red wine has more calories than does white wine. A glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot red wines contains 122 calories. Pinot Noir has 121 calories. Red Zinfandel has the most calories, 129 per 5-oz. serving.
