The number of calories you burn by jogging on the spot -- that is, jogging on a treadmill -- is determined by how long you jog and your weight. Jogging is defined as running at a slow, leisurely pace -- between 4 mph and 6 mph.

Formula

The formula for calculating the number of calories you will burn by jogging in place on a treadmill is (METs x 3.5 x weight in kg) ÷ 200 x duration in minutes. According to the American Heart Association, METs, called metabolic equivalent, is a number that represents the amount of energy used.

Convert Pounds into Kilograms

Convert your weight into kilograms by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2. A 135-lb. person weighs 61 kg.

MET Values

Fitness Magazine reports that jogging on a treadmill is defined as moving 4 mph to 5 mph. Your MET value for jogging in place on a flat surface at 4 mph is 5.0. Jogging 5 mph has a MET value of 8.0.

Calories Burned

Jogging on a treadmill at 4 mph for 45 minutes will burn 240 calories for a 135-lb. person. Jogging on a treadmill at 5 mph will burn 171 calories in 20 minutes.
