Calories Burned While Throwing a Cast Net

A cast net, also known as a throw net, is used when fishing. A cast net is tossed over the water and sinks, where it traps moving fish. Although fishing and throwing a cast net is a sedentary activity, you can burn calories.

Formula

MET refers to metabolic equivalent, which is a number that represents the energy output during an exercise. To calculate the calories burned while throwing a cast net, use this formula: (METs x 3.5 x weight in kg) ÷ (200) x duration in minutes. To figure out your weight in kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. If you weigh 155 lb, you weigh 70.4 kg.

MET Value

The Compendium of Physical Activities Tracking Guide, by Dr. Bill Haskell of Stanford University, indicates that fishing while standing has a MET value of 3-1/2. The MET value of other activities in connection with fishing, such as throwing a cast net, according to the National Cancer Institute, is 4-1/2.

Calories Burned

At 155 lb., if you spend about 10 minutes throwing a cast net while fishing, you will burn 55 calories. Fishing, and activities related to fishing, for two hours can burn 662 calories.
