How Many Calories Can Be Burned With a Fan Bike?

A fan bike is like a stationary bike, but has a fan where the front wheel would go. The biggest difference is that the fan makes you feel cooler. The number of calories burned riding a fan bike depends on your weight and the intensity of exercise.

Formula

To calculate the number of calories burned while riding a stationary fan bike, use this formula: (METs x 3.5 x weight in kg) ÷ (200) x duration in minutes. METs, or metabolic equivalents, is a numeral that represents energy expended while exercising, the American Heart Association exaplains. Calculate weight in kilograms by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2. If you weigh 140 lbs., for example, you weigh 63.6 kg.

MET Value

Riding a stationary bike with very little effort, equivalent to 50 watts, has a MET value of 3.0. Expending moderate effort on a fan bike, the equivalent of 150 watts, has a MET value of 7.0. A vigorous workout, equivalent to 200 watts, has a MET value of 10.5, according to the Compendium of Physical Activities Tracking Guide.

Calories Burned

If you weigh 140 lbs. and ride a stationary fan bike for 20 minutes, you can burn 66 calories. Riding a stationary bike at a moderate pace for 30 minutes burns 232 calories. Riding a fan bike at a vigorous pace for 40 minutes burns 463 calories.
