The kidneys are bean-shaped organs located on both sides of your spine near the middle of your back. These organs are responsible for removing wastes, toxins and excess water from your bloodstream. They convert water and wastes into urine, which is excreted from your body through your urinary tract. Certain foods may help keep your kidneys healthy, helping them to clear waste from your body. Check with your doctor before changing your diet to aid kidney function.

Cranberries

Cranberries contain chemical compounds that may help destroy bacteria in your kidneys, preventing inflammation and infection, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." It may also acidify your urine, preventing toxic buildup in your kidneys. This may promote healing of damaged kidney cells.

Parsley

Parsley is primarily known as a food garnish; however, this herb may also offer healing properties. This herb contains two chemicals, myristicin and apiol, that have diuretic effects, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." These chemicals may aid your kidneys in removing excess water from your body. They may also help remove uric acid, a byproduct formed when your body digests saturated fats in meats and dairy products. High levels of uric acid in your bloodstream may damage your kidneys.

Carrots

Carrots are an abundant source of vitamin A, an immune system stimulant that may help protect your kidneys against viral and bacterial infection, according to the Balches. The vitamin A in carrots is also an antioxidant and may reduce the risk of kidney cell damage caused by toxins and free radical molecules.

Soybeans

Soybeans provide lean protein for the manufacture of healthy kidney cells. They are also a rich source zinc, according to the Balches. Zinc may help boost immune system function. It may also prevent the crystallization of calcium in your kidneys and urinary tract, which can help prevent the formation of kidney stones.
