Lichen planus, pronounced LY-kin-PLAN-us, is a common skin disease that causes itchy red bumps to appear mostly on the ankles and wrists and sometimes on or in the mouth. It is considered an autoimmune disease, which means your immune system is attacking aspects of your own body. The condition is likely to resolve within two years, although it may recur, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. For immediate symptom relief, aromatherapy, a type of alternative medicine, may help. As with any new treatment, consult your doctor first.

What is Lichen Planus?

Dermatologists describe lichen planus as an inflammatory disease that affects the skin and mouth, or both, and is most common in middle-aged adults. It is most likely caused by stress, genetics or possibly hepatitis C. Lichen planus-like bumps could also be a reaction to medications taken for heart disease, arthritis or high blood pressure. The bumps are small, flat and dark red in color. They are itchy and have a rash-like appearance. There is no cure for lichen planus.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of psychological and physical well-being, according to AromaWeb.com. Although relatively new to the west, aromatherapy has been used for more than 3500 years. By simply smelling the plant oils, your limbic system, part of your brain, is activated and releases healing chemicals. Aromatherapy is a natural way to feel better without the risk of side effects.

Aromatherapy for Lichen Planus

According to "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy" by Valerie Ann Worwood, to relieve the symptoms of lichen planus, try one or all of the following essential oils:

Rose--Rose essential oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and can calm and reduce the size of the red bumps.
Tea Tree--Tea Tree essential oil is a powerful immune stimulant and is effective in fighting disease.
Benzoin--Benzoin essential oil comes from a rain forest plant and will relieve the itching sensation.

Purchase any of the above as essential oils and then dilute with a carrier oil--almond or sesame oil. Use 2 drops of essential oil per 100 drops of carrier oil and store in a small glass bottle. Use a small amount of the mixture and massage it directly on the affected area, or pour a small amount into your bath.

Prevention

Symptoms of lichen planus may easily re-appear during times of high stress. To prevent this from happening, it is best to cultivate a stress-free lifestyle. Additional aromatherapy techniques can be used to assist you in prevention. You can use an oil burner to fill a room with healing scents. Use lavender, geranium and marjoram oils to reduce stress. You can also add these essential oils to a bowl of hot water for a facial steam.

Cost

The essential oils mentioned above range from $5 to $15, at 2010 prices, and will go a long way. The carrier oils also mentioned will cost between $8 and $15. An oil burner will have a wider price range of $10 up to $80. In comparison to what a prescription medicine would cost, aromatherapy can save you money and provide a safer and more natural way to healing.
