Prepared protein powder, available in health food stores and many supermarkets, is used by athletes and others interested in increasing their protein intake with an easy drink. Protein powder can make a nutrient-packed meal or snack. The UCLA School of Medicine recommends mixing it with fruit and milk for a diet-friendly breakfast. Although using protein powder incorrectly can interfere with weight control, MayoClinic.com notes that if utilized as meal replacements, protein powder drinks can aid weight loss. Many people are bothered by the texture of protein powder, however, and want to reduce the graininess.

Step 1

Use a blender when mixing protein powder with liquids. The best way to decrease the grainy texture is to mix the powder extremely well. A blender incorporates the powder more thoroughly into milk, soy milk or juice than simply stirring with a spoon.

Step 2

Add ice cubes and fresh or frozen fruit to smoothies made with protein powder. Sometimes the inclusion of extra ingredients in protein drinks can help decrease the powder's graininess.

Step 3

Stir protein powder into hot oatmeal rather than using it in a drink. Used in this way, protein powder adds a jolt of flavor and nutrients, and the heat of the dish helps "melt" the powder into the oatmeal. The end result is a creamier, smoother way to enjoy protein powder.
