Adding singing to simple activities such as standing, sitting or moving and dancing around burns more calories than those actions performed on their own, notes the ShapeSense.com online activity calculator.

Baseline

A 35-year-old, 150-lb. woman who is 5 feet 5 inches tall burns burns about 90 calories per hour when singing sitting down and 121 calories per hour when singing standing up. If she sings while moving around, as in a praise service with dancing at a church, she burns 310 calories per hour.

Expert Insight

The Mayo Clinic notes that your actual calories burned in any activity will likely differ from published calorie burning figures, due to a number of personal factors. For example, men burn slightly more calories per hour than women, and heavy people burn more calories than people who weigh less.

Considerations

While singing does burn some calories, it's not an aerobic exercise, which is the best way to lose body weight from fat. Try singing while dancing or walking for the most fat-burning benefits.
