Mumps is caused by a viral infection and is highly contagious. It can be contracted by breathing in saliva droplets that are disbursed through the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs. Since a mumps vaccine was introduced in 1967, the incidence of the disease in the United States has dropped from more than 100,000 cases annually to around 300 a year, according to the New York State Health Department. Despite the administration of the vaccine, outbreaks are still possible. In 2006, the incidence of mumps rose to about 6,000 cases in the United States. Knowing the side effects of mumps can help you to get appropriate treatment for the virus as early as possible.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effect associated with mumps is a noticeable swelling of salivary glands on the face. However, the New York State Department of Health reports that as many as a third of people with mumps won't experience swelling. Other common side effects include difficulty swallowing, fatigue and weakness. A fever of up to 103 degrees Farenheit is usually associated with mumps. Pancreatitis, a swelling of the pancreas, is also possible; this will cause abdominal pain and tenderness.
Reproductive Side Effects
Orchitis and oophoritis are possible side effects of mumps. Orchitis is a condition that causes painful swelling in one or both of the testes, as well as the lower abdomen. Oophoritis is a swelling of the ovaries, which may cause severe pain in the abdomen. Mastitis, or inflammation of the breast is also possible. A woman who is pregnant could miscarry as a side effect of the mumps.
Rare Side Effects
Meningitis and encephalitis are rare side effects associated with mumps. Meningitis occurs when the fluid and membranes around the spinal cord and/or brain become infected or inflamed. A stiff neck, fever over 102 degrees Farenheit and a severe headache are signs of this complication. Encephalitis, which is characterized by flu-like symptoms, is an inflammation in the brain caused by a viral infection. Joint pain, high fever, lethargy and irritability might accompany encephalitis. Hearing loss is another rare side effect that can affect one or both ears.
