Ingredients in Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a single-molecule antioxidant found in red wine grapes, certain vines, berries, peanuts and Japanese knotweed. The natural sources of resveratrol contain other antioxidants that are also good for our bodies, such as proanthocyanidins in grape extract. Classified as a polyphenol, resveratrol may protect against cancer, diabetes, heart disease and many neuro-degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Resveratrol may also unlock the key to longevity and the science of anti-aging. Common ingredients in products containing resveratrol include grape seed and skin extract, Japanese knotweed, antioxidants, resveratrol, quercetin and super fruits.

Grape Extract

Grape seed and skin extract is a common ingredient in resveratrol supplements. Both provide a source of natural resveratrol. Polyphenol antioxidants from grape extracts can help protect the body from heart disease and cancer, according to the Life Extension Foundation. Scientists are only beginning to understand the many benefits of the antioxidants found in both grape skin and seed extract.

Japanese Knotweed

Also known as Polygonum cuspidatum, Japanese knotweed is a shrub-like plant with very high levels of resveratrol. Many products use Japanese knotweed as a reliable source of the compound because it is easier to extract resveratrol from the plant than from red wine grapes. Japanese knotweed originated in Japan and China and has since migrated to the United States. The cost-effective use of Japanese knotweed in resveratrol products should not rule out the use of wine grapes, which contain many other healthy antioxidants as well.

Quercetin

Quercetin is another polyphenol antioxidant found in red wine, apples, onions, grapefruit, tea and green vegetables. Purported to be a powerful energy-enhancing compound, quercetin is one of the ingredients in the natural energy supplement known as FRS. Quercetin may also provide antioxidant protection against heart disease, cancer, allergies and obesity. Resveratrol products may contain quercetin because it is theorized that it can extend the activity of resveratrol in the body.

Super Fruits

Another natural addition to resveratrol products are super fruits, such as acai berries, pomegranate, blueberries, strawberries, goji berries and tart cherries. Not only do these contain small amounts of resveratrol, but super fruits are also high in antioxidants. Like red wine grapes, super fruits contain polyphenol antioxidants with many benefits for the entire body.
