When trying to conceive, it is important for a man's sperm count to be normal. According to MayoClinic.com, a normal sperm count is 20 million sperm in 1 mL of semen. Although the sperm count seems high, only about 200 survive to reach the egg. If the sperm count is low, the number of sperm that survive to reach the egg decrease making it difficult for conception to occur. Several herbs have been found to increase sperm count and increase fertility. Contact a knowledgeable doctor first for dosage recommendations and treatment advice.

Asian Ginseng

Step 1

Purchase a standardized extract to receive a consistent dose. Asian ginseng also comes in dried root, tincture and fresh root forms. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that animal studies have shown an increase in both sperm production and movement.

Step 2

Take 200 mg of Asian ginseng standardized extract three times each day. Schedule your doses with meals to prevent missing a dose. Asian ginseng can lower the blood sugar so taking it with meals will help prevent this side effect.

Step 3

Discontinue taking Asian ginseng if you begin to experience high blood pressure, vomiting or nosebleeds occur. Contact a doctor if you experience these side effects.

Carnitine

Step 1

Discuss taking carnitine supplements with your doctor prior to beginning therapy. This supplement can have interactions with some prescription medications, including AZT which is used as at treatment for HIV and AIDS. It can also interact with doxorubicin, isotretinoin and valproic acid. Scheduling an appointment to speak with your doctor prior to taking this supplement will ensure that your safety and well-being are maintained.

Step 2

Purchase a carnitine supplement which may be labeled as L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine or propionyl-L-carnitine. Carnitine supplements are easily found in drugstores, grocery stores and health food stores nationwide.

Step 3

Take 300 to 1000 mg of carnitine three times each day. To determine the dosage right for you, consult with a doctor familiar with herbal treatments for fertility.
