An ulcer is a lesion that may appear on your skin or mucus membrane. The mucus membrane is the tissue that lines some of the organs and cavities in your body, including the lungs, mouth, nose and digestive tract. Foods Rich In Folic Acid
Foods rich in folic acid may help to prevent or reduce symptoms of ulcers. According to the National Institutes of Health, a folate deficiency is associated with mouth ulcers and peptic ulcers. Mouth ulcers are open lesions in your mouth. Peptic ulcers are an erosion in the lining of the stomach that occurs when the stomach protective lining breaks down. Maintaining a well-balanced diet that is rich in folic acid may help you avoid a folic acid deficiency and the subsequent development of ulcers. Food sources of folic acid include beans and legumes, wheat bran, dark leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, poultry, shellfish, liver and pork. This vitamin can also be obtained in a supplement form, called folate.
Foods Rich In Flavanoids
A strain of bacteria, called heliobacter pylori, is the common cause of ulcers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The University of Maryland Medical Center inform that eating foods rich in flavanoids may help stop the growth of this strain of bacteria in your body. Foods that contain flavanoids include apples, celery, cranberries, garlic and onion.
Antioxidant-Rich Foods
Foods that are rich in antioxidants may help to reduce symptoms of ulcers. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, eating antioxidant foods may help to reduce or prevent inflammation in your body, and therefore help to reduce symptoms associated with ulcers. Antioxidant-rich foods include fruits, such as tomatoes, blueberries and cranberries. Other good sources are vegetables such as bell peppers and different varieties of squash.
