A nebulizer is a medical device that allows infants or children to receive medication in the form of mist that is inhaled into the lungs, according to KidsHealth.org. Often it is used for asthma or other lung or breathing difficulties. The mist goes directly into the lungs to allow the medication to begin working right away. This method of medicine administration is especially convenient for infants who are too young to use an inhaler. With the right equipment, giving a nebulizer treatment to an infant can be simple.
Step 1
Purchase a nebulizer mask that is compatible with your nebulizer machine. Some nebulizers already come with a mask, but if it only has a mouthpiece, you will need the mask for an infant.
Step 2
Prepare the nebulizer for treatment. Begin by washing your hands with soap and water. Place the machine on a stable surface near a place where your infant will either rest or play during treatment. Plug the machine into a power outlet if it is not a battery-operated device.
Step 3
Prepare the medication and place it into the nebulizer cup. Follow the instructions carefully. Some medications require mixing with water or saline. Connect the cup to the nebulizer and attach the necessary tubing. Prepare the face mask by ensuring it is well connected to the tubes as well.
Step 4
Turn the nebulizer on. Put the mask over your infant's face and ensure it covers the nose and mouth. Keep your infant entertained until the treatment is complete. This takes between eight and 10 minutes.
Step 5
Remove the mask and the medicine cup from the machine. Be sure to thoroughly wash both parts with soap and warm water.
Tips and Warnings
- Try reading or singing to your infant during the treatment to keep her calm. An infant can also receive the nebulizer treatment while sleeping. Allow your infant to play during the treatment if she would like. Making the nebulizer treatment part of the daily routine can ensure it remains a positive activity.
- Do not continue the nebulizer treatment if your infant is crying. In order for the mist to reach the lungs the infant needs to be breathing calmly. Soothe the infant and try again.
