The adrenal glands, situated on the top of each kidney, produce the steroidal sex hormones testosterone, estrogen and cortisol, which are essential to the normal functioning of your body. Cortisol, known as stress hormone, aims to suppress your immune system during the times of physical and psychological stress. A disease called adrenal fatigue occurs when your body cannot control a stress response, mainly due to not enough cortisol, and you experience symptoms such as chronic fatigue and mood disturbances. Some herbs have shown potential in improving stress response, but always seek a doctor's advice before using them.
Licorice
Licorice, commonly known as "sweet root," has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It has a long and highly varied record of uses. Among its most consistent and important uses are as a restorative and stimulant for the adrenal glands. The basis of this effect is that licorice root contains glycyrrhizin, which raises your body's level of cortisol by inhibiting its breakdown, according to George Mason University.
Asian Ginseng
The adaptogenic herb Asian ginseng, or Panax ginseng, may also be effective for the treatment of adrenal insufficiency. Asian ginseng contains ginsenosides, which have been found to have a strong anti-stress effect through supporting the adrenal glands, notes the University of Tulsa. Asian ginseng may reduce stress in both men and women.
Echinacea
Echinacea is the dried rhizome, roots or other parts of a purple wildflower, native to North America. It is best known as a potent immunostimulant. Echinacea also has long been used to increase stress resistance in treating adrenal fatigue syndrome. This herb is available in a wide range of different forms, such as tincture, which is an alcohol-based preparation, and capsules, which contain a powder of the dried plant or root.
