Testosterone serves as a safe and effective therapy for those men with androgen deficiency, a health condition that involves a decrease in androgen levels. Androgens helps control and maintain masculine characteristics, according to a study published by the Medical Journal of Australia in 2006. However, as mentioned in this study, in recent years the rate of testosterone abuse and misuse has become increasingly alarming, causing a number of unwanted results and complications related to too much testosterone within the male body.

Acne

According to AcneNet, the online information resource of the American Academy of Dermatology, the surge of sex hormones such as testosterone causes the increase in the production of sebum, the oily substance on the skin. This increases the risk for the formation of clogs in the skin pores leading to the development of acne. And as mentioned in the said study published by the Medical Journal of Australia, the trunk usually receives most of the skin acne distribution in male patients who use excess amounts of exogenous testosterone. The skin condition of those who misuse or abuse this hormone usually improves with the proper withdrawal from the offending excess exogenous testosterone.

Testicular Atrophy

Testicular atrophy or shrinkage in the actual testicular size usually occurs in those patients who use excessive amounts of testosterone. The study by the Medical Journal of Australia reports that this testicular shrinkage happens when normal function of the testicles diminishes due to the persistent presence of excessive levels of this synthetic form of male hormone. The recovery from this suppression of the testicular function usually occurs for up to 12 months after the exogenous testosterone withdrawal. Eventually, normal testicular functions and testicular size return when you stop taking testosterone.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia or abnormal enlargement of mammary glands outside adolescence usually occurs in male patients who use excessive amounts of exogenous testosterone. The Medical Journal of Australia study says this occurs as a response of the male mammary glands to the surge of sex hormones within the body. Withdrawal from this exogenous male sex hormone usually resolves this problem.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing during sleep, can happen in patients who use high levels of exogenous testosterone, according to a January 2004 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This may be due to a centrally acting mechanism that affects sleep. However this finding warrants further clinical studies and investigation to prove the direct relationship of the high doses of testosterone levels with the development of sleep apnea.
