Central Nervous System Effects
Although rare, Zantac 150 can cause fatigue and sleepiness or, the opposite, insomnia, according to the Drugs.com website. It can also lead to dizziness, vertigo and loss of balance. Blurred vision has been reported, as has headache. Depression, agitation, confusion and hallucinations have been seen.
Cardiovascular Changes
Also rare, but possible, are an increased or decreased heart rate or abnormal heart rhythm, according to the "Physicians' Desk Reference" (PDR).
Gastrointestinal Distress
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or abdominal pain are common possible side effects of any oral drug, and Zantac 150 is no exception, Drugs.com reports. Rare cases of inflammation of the pancreas have been seen. Various types of liver damage and yellow jaundice are possible. Isolated episodes of liver failure have been noted.
Musculoskeletal Pain
Uncommon instances of muscle or joint aches have developed presumably secondary to Zantac 150, according to the package insert from the manufacturer.
Blood Changes
Zantac 150 may lower the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets in the body, the package insert says, noting the occurrence is rare.
Breast Effects
Cases of breast enlargement and leakage in both men and women have occurred, but are rare, the package insert says.
Skin Rash
Many drugs, including Zantac 150, may cause a variety of rashes, according to the PDR. Infrequently, a serious allergic-type skin reaction could occur.
Respiratory Difficulties
It has been suggested that those taking Zantac 150 could be at greater risk of developing pneumonia, the package insert notes. However, a cause and effect relationship has not been proven. A severe allergic reaction could cause spasm of the airways and difficulty breathing.
Kidney Damage
Zantac 150 is metabolized by the kidneys, so effects on these organs are possible. Damage to or inflammation of the kidneys could develop, Drugs.com reports.
Hypersensitivity
Rare individuals may experience a severe reaction to Zantac 150. This could be characterized by fever, rash, swelling, shortness of breath and anaphylaxis.
