Chemotherapy treatments are mentally and physically debilitating for most cancer patients. The various chemicals that enter your body cause overall weakness, nausea and fatigue. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, fatigue is a complaint among 70 percent of chemo patients. The effects of chemotherapy often impact your ability to perform everyday tasks. Reduced appetite is also a problem, as you may not be taking in enough calories to keep your strength up. Exercise and dietary modifications may help you maintain your body strength during chemotherapy treatment.

Step 1

Visit your doctor and get an evaluation of your condition, as well as an individualized exercise plan, suggests the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability.

Step 2

Perform some type of aerobic activity on a regular basis to help combat fatigue during chemotherapy treatment, says the American Academy of Family Physicians. Choose an activity you enjoy and ensure your doctor approves.

Step 3

Eat higher-calorie foods when your appetite permits to make up for times you feel nauseous and don't want to eat. Choose whey protein smoothies, full-fat dairy products, nuts, legumes and eggs.

Step 4

Eat foods that are in line with good health such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat dairy.

Step 5

Rest your body when you need to, and try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
