If the wall of flesh between your nostrils is out of alignment, you have a deviated septum. According to MayoClinic.com, this is often the result of an injury, most commonly a broken nose. Although losing weight will not repair a deviated symptom, some people can alleviate breathing symptoms and severe snoring that stem from a combination of a deviated symptom and being overweight. As you lose weight, the loose flesh in your throat and face will obstruct air less.
Step 1
Adopt a diet that cuts a few hundred calories per day from your usual intake. Many people find they can do this by switching from soda to water, or by skipping dessert.
Step 2
Walk for 20 to 30 minutes every day at a pace fast enough to break a sweat. Pay attention to your breathing while you walk. If you find the deviated septum makes it hard to get air in, discontinue walking and check in with your doctor.
Step 3
Perform a more vigorous cardiovascular workout three times per week, for 20 minutes per session. As with your walks, pay attention to how your nose affects your ability to take in oxygen.
Step 4
Do a resistance workout three times per week. Focus on your upper body twice per week, and your lower body once per week. Although resistance training won't burn as many calories as cardio, it does boost your metabolism, which will make your body burn more calories in all activities.
Step 5
Weigh yourself once per week and adjust your program accordingly. If you're losing between 1 and 2 lbs. per week, you're in the healthy range for effective weight loss. If you're losing less, reduce your food intake or increase the intensity of your workouts. If you're losing more, ease off on one component of your weight loss plan.
Tips and Warnings
- If you sleep with a partner, ask her to listen when you're asleep to see if your snoring has improved. The volume and frequency of snoring is one of the first indicators of whether or not you're making weight-loss progress.
