Ear wax is an essential secretion in the ear canal that protects the ear drum from bacterial infections and dust. Typically, ear wax is soft, wet and sticky, but it can also be hard and dry, too. The hard earwax can cause ear aches and hearing loss if it is not removed properly and might require medical intervention. When the amount of ear wax increases, it gets pushed out into the ear canal where it can be removed with the help of a cotton swap. Hearing loss that stems from waxy buildup is usually temporary.
Symptoms
According to the National Institute of Health, symptoms of ear wax buildup include a plugging sensation, tinnitus, ear ache and hearing loss. Ear aches can occur because of the amount of wax and pressure that builds up in the ear.
Causes
Ear wax buildup occurs when the wax is not removed regularly or when the ear produces more wax than normal. In such cases, you will have to remove the wax regularly using a cotton swap but in some cases, improper removal can case the wax to move farther inside the ear canal, affecting hearing and causing discomfort. People with hard wax, a history of ear infections, a lot of hair in the ear canal or deformed ear canals are most susceptible to ear wax buildup, according to Clinical Knowledge Summaries.
Treatment
If the cause of your ear ache is wax buildup, then an ear, nose and throat specialist will be able to remove it. Your doctor may also recommend ear drops to thin or soften the ear wax.
Home Remedies
Most of the time, wax buildup does not require medical intervention and wax can be removed at home. First, you must soften the wax by slightly warming baby oil or glycerin and pouring a few drops into the ear canal. This should allow the wax to come out naturally by leaning your head to one side or using a cotton swap to pull out the wax. You might feel dizzy after removing the waxy buildup.
Considerations
If you are unable to remove the wax from your ear or experience unbearable pain while doing so, contact your doctor. You must also contact a doctor if you see a fluid discharge from the ear, accompanied with a plugging sensation.
