Liver cancer begins in the cells of the liver. Doctors aren't sure what causes liver cancer. Nevertheless, certain risk factors --- such as liver cirrhosis, hepatitis B virus and chronic alcohol and tobacco use --- may cause the cell to grow and divide at a rapid rate. The treatment normally depends on the condition of the patient and the stage of cancer. Liver cancer is usually curable when diagnosed and treated early. Some Ayurvedic herbs have shown potential in inhibiting liver cancer cells, but you should always check with your doctor before considering any herbal treatments.
American Ginseng
American ginseng, an important nontimber forest product of the eastern United States, may be effective in combating liver cancer, states the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC. The root of American ginseng is the part that is utilized for medicinal purposes; it has the highest content of ginsenoside and its various components, including glycyrrhizin. These are the ingredients of American ginseng's medicinal properties, notes UMMC.
Garlic
Garlic, an edible bulb from a plant in the onion family, has significant potential for preventing and treating liver cancer disease. Allicin and alliin, two major organosulfur compounds of garlic, have been found to induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, when added to liver cancer cell lines in laboratory studies, Rockefeller University reports. However, garlic hasn't yet shown antitumor effects in humans.
Cumin
Cumin, a small herbaceous plant, may offer cancer protection, especially against liver cancer, according to Rockefeller University. Cumin seeds contain potent antioxidant substances that can scavenge free radicals, damaging compounds in your body that alter cells and tamper with DNA and cause mutation. Cellular mutation is thought to be the most common pathway for cancer.
