The Daniel Fast is a spiritual fast that Christians undertake to get closer to God and avoid the sins of life. It is based on the Book of Daniel in the Bible and follows what the prophet ate when he was a prisoner of the King of Babylon. During the fast, you must refrain from eating animal-based foods, sugar, leavened bread and caffeine. You are permitted to eat fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains for 10 or 21 days. Break the fast carefully to avoid overindulging in poor food choices.

Step 1

Increase your water intake to avoid dehydration, especially if you will start consuming caffeine and salt. Consume eight 8-oz. glasses of water each day.

Step 2

Incorporate the restricted foods on the Daniel Fast slowly. For example, on the first day that you break the fast, have one serving of an animal-based food that day. Gauge how your body responds to eating it and decide to cut back or add additional restricted foods the next day.

Step 3

Keep your food portions small. As you add the restricted foods back into your diet, eat small servings as your body may be used to eating less depending on how long you fasted. Eating large portions may make you sluggish and ill.

Step 4

Continue to eat fruit, vegetables and whole grains daily to develop a habit of eating healthy foods all of the time.

Step 5

Slow down your pace. If you are tired, get extra rest. Don't overexert yourself with exercise or strenuous activities.
