Looking in the mirror to see a flare-up of whiteheads on your face can be an unnerving experience. Baseball caps and makeup are just a couple of ways to hide your face, but this only masks the problem. Whiteheads are a type of acne caused by excess skin cells, an overproduction of oil and bacteria that clog the hair follicle, causing slightly raised bumps, says MayoClinic.com. Having whiteheads can be frustrating, but solutions are available. Making modifications to your skin care regimen can help treat whiteheads to reveal a clear, even complexion.

Cleansing

Keeping your skin clean can help wash away excess oil and dead skin cells. Wash your face with a gentle facial cleanser twice per day. Avoid using facial scrubs, masks or soaps that can dry out your skin and possibly worsen whiteheads.

Topical Treatments

Topical treatments can unclog pores and dry up oil on the skin's surface. Try an over-the-counter topical lotion that contains ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Apply a thin layer to clean skin in the morning and at night. If your breakouts don't' respond to over-the-counter options, consider a prescription treatment. Ask your doctor about topical prescription medications like tretinoin, adapalene or tazarotene, suggests the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Cosmetics

Oily makeup or skin care products can clog pores and make whiteheads more apparent. Use cosmetics that are labeled "oil-free," "water-based" or "noncomedogenic." Make sure to remove makeup before going to bed every night.

Don't Touch

Keep your hands off of your face to prevent the spread of bacteria. Don't rest your head in your hands or place your hands on your face. Resist the urge to squeeze or pick at whiteheads. Picking or squeezing whiteheads can cause infection or scarring, notes MayoClinic.com.
