Newport Beach is a prosperous city located in Orange County, California, 10 miles south of Santa Ana. It shares a northern border with Costa Mesa. The numerous attractions on offer include the beaches of the Balboa Peninsula and Corona del Mar, the San Joaquin Hills and the Upper Newport Bay Harbor. These features attract many tourists annually. As a means of family accommodation, campgrounds are an adventurous alternative to the many hotels in the area.

Choice

All forms of camping are possible in the Newport Beach area, often within the same campground. Newport Dunes RV Park, for example, allocates 382 RV sites and also provides outdoor tent and group camping. This is the closest camping site to Newport Beach. Others in the vicinity are Sunset Vista RV Campground, located a few miles up the coast at Huntington Beach, Orange County Fair and Exposition Center in Costa Mesa and Crystal Cove State Park just north of Laguna Beach to the south. Camping sites specific to RVs include Stone Villa RV Park in Costa Mesa and Bolsa Chica State Beach and Huntington By the Sea RV Resort, both in Huntington Beach.

When To Go

Newport Beach enjoys mild summers and cooler winters. The ocean breeze means temperatures rarely exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while warm currents prevent it from dropping much below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The city receives little rain, but it is most likely to fall from January to March. Camping tourism is, therefore, most popular in July and August when conditions are most conducive to outdoor activity. In order to avoid the masses and still enjoy ideal camping weather, May, September and October are the best months to go.

Amenities

All camping sites in the Newport Beach area provide the essential RV hookups, such as electricity and water. They also allocate a dump station for disposing of waste. Particular to camping sites around Newport Beach, many amenities can be accessed on the beaches themselves. The beachfront at Sunset Vista RV Campground includes cold showers, food stalls and restrooms, as well as a 2,400-space parking lot. Newport Dunes offers a village center with a pool, spa and restaurants.

Attractions

Among the top attractions/facilities in Newport Beach are the Newport Wine Lab, Pelican Hill Golf Club, which is home to two 18-hole championship courses, Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Landing Sports Clinic and Spa Gregorie's. Some of the campsites are situated right beside the beach or, in the case of Newport Dunes, a lagoon. The lagoon affords kayaking, sailing and water sports opportunities. Bolsa Chica State Beach offers surfing, hiking and bike trails, fishing and picnic facilities.

Cost

At Newport Dunes a small 22-by-25-foot RV site costs upwards of $55 a day in winter and $64 per day in summer. A 25-by-40-foot site starts at $59 in winter and $89 in summer. Newport Dunes provide tents that can be used in small sites without an RV. Rates are significantly cheaper for weekend group bookings, but these may not be possible in busy months. At Bolsa Chica, 20-by-40-foot RV sites cost from $50 to $65 per night all year round. Orange County Fair and Exposition Center charges only $30 per night for individual campers.
